Our Ministry
Social Action
Social Action is a vital part of our church life. The Social Action Committee provides numerous ways and different opportunities for becoming involved in social concerns. Some congregation members are able to participate through direct action. Others enjoy serving by contributing funds for numerous social action projects, while still others get involved in letter writing and educational seminars.
Christian Community Action Shalom United Church of Christ has had a long history of involvement with Christian Community Action (CCA). Currently, we are apart of the Adopt-An-Apartment program. This year, we contributed food and clothing to the food and clothing bank at CCA.
Cook and Care Walk-A-Thon The Cook and Care Walk-A-Thon held in October is a fundraiser for the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers, The Community Soup Kitchen, and FISH of Greater New Haven. Our youth have traditionally walked along with others from our congregation. Thanks to all who pledged time and money for this event.
Interfaith Cooperative Ministries Shalom United Church of Christ is a member of the Board of Directors for the Interfaith Cooperative Ministries (ICM). We participate in monthly meetings devoted to sharing social action events with other congregations of multiple denominations. During the first week after school is out, a free interdenominational church school is held called Summer-InFaith.
Shalom United Church of Christ always provides either volunteer leadership, or a lunch/snack for the 60+ children and staff. The Cook and Care Walk-A- Thon mentioned above, is sponsored by ICM. In addition, our members help with the Thanksgiving Dinner by baking turkeys and pies, serving on Thanksgiving, and participating in the planning. Our church has provided numerous paper goods and bags to help feed the 300 people who are homebound.
Nonviolence and Peace The Shalom United Church of Christ voted in 2001 to study nonviolence and peace during 2002- 2003. The social action committee was involved in notifying congregation members of various ways they could witness to their own beliefs through letter writing, peace witness, and attending the Second Hour programs.
